BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

Before you embark on actual gorilla trekking or chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda or Uganda, adequate preparation is required. Trekking through the African jungles to search for the endangered mountain gorilla family or a community of wild chimpanzees to most holiday travelers is a dream come true. Prior traveling to your favorite destination to engage in any of the two thrilling primate adventures, first, you should prepare adequately.

KEY AREAS OF INTEREST

All persons intending to visit Rwanda or Uganda to see mountain gorillas or chimpanzees should be above 15 years. This safety measure is intended to ensure protection of chimpanzees/gorillas from the infectious diseases. Aside from protecting these great apes from diseases, visitors above 15 years are fit enough to navigate through the tropical rainforest and high elevation for 2-6 hours and return safely.

Unlike other wild animals, gorillas or chimpanzees stay in the tropical rainforests rising at an elevation of about 3000m. Their habitats are characterized by steep slopes with the long adventure not predictable.

Gorilla trekking or chimpanzee tracking safaris all require you to have valid permits and should be obtained prior to actual primate adventure. Depending on the destination, a gorilla permit in Uganda is issued at USD 700 (for category of foreign non-residents, USD 600 for foreign residents and shs. 250,000 for all Ugandans and the East Africa Community citizens.

The simplest way to have your gorilla permit booked is by dealing with a trusted ground tour operator and you don’t need to look no further than WanderLux Safaris Ltd. A gorilla permit guarantees you allocation of a habituated gorilla family and park guide services.

When interacting with a family of gorillas, please endeavor to keep a distance of 7-8 meters away from these great apes. Use of flashlight cameras for taking pictures isn’t acceptable and better you turn the flash off before you begin recording a video or taking picture. If you are interested in filming, take note all filmmakers must have filming permits and while actual adventure, always observe the set guidelines.

Visits to see Rwanda gorillas or Uganda gorillas are done to already habituated gorilla families. Each destination has its habituated families with Uganda consisting of over 21 groups living in the 5 sectors –Ntebeko, Ruhija, Rushaga, Buhoma and Nkuringo. In Rwanda, about 12 fully habituated families all exist for trekking in Volcanoes National Park including Sabyinyo, Susa B and A, Agashya and others.

Before you embark on long day gorilla trekking, know if you are fit enough. On interesting note, there is an option for persons with disability or fitness challenges. You can hire a stretcher and you will be lifted by energetic porters starting from the briefing area till you return or walking stick to use to keep you fit while navigating through the muddy and slippery gorilla habitats.

Hire porters –in case of heavy luggage, you will need someone to assist you carry them. Porters are available at the park offices to assist in lifting luggage and allow you enjoy full concentration. At USD10-15, you can find a porter to hire in Volcanoes NP, Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

When considering things to pack for a gorilla vacation in Uganda or Rwanda, try as much as you can to carry only essentials and leave your designers back home. Being a long day search for great apes in the jungles, pack light and consider the following:

Waterproof daypack, camera with no flashlight, long sleeved shirts, long trousers, hiking boots, safari hat, sweater, insect repellent, rain jacket, long socks, gorilla permit and more,
